Question: I just bought a new computer that came with Windows 8 or 8.1 and I don't like using it. What options do I have to getting rid of Windows 8 or 8.1?
Answer: In most (all most all) cases, you have the right to downgrade your computer to Windows 7 for free, but there are certain requirements that you must meet before you can downgrade for free. If you don't meet the requirements, you can still downgrade, but you will have to pay for a copy of Windows 7. Look at the information below, which is taken from the Microsoft website and who is allowed to downgrade for free.
Windows 8.1 Pro includes downgrade rights to:
- Windows 7 Professional
Following the guide from Microsoft, you must have the Pro (Professional) version of Windows 8 or 8.1 to downgrade for free. If you have the Home Premium version, which a lot of computers come with, you will have to purchase a copy of Windows 7 before you can downgrade. If, at any time in the future, you wish to go back to Windows 8.1, you retain the right to reinstall it on you computer for free as well.
